music tracks in films

music has a very key roll in film. it sets the scene and the mood of the scene. without it film would be boring.
afew examples:
jaws. jaws uses music to build suspence in a scene for when the shark is about to attack "jaws theme" (by john willams) with out this legnedary track playing in the back round the scene would have no fear fact at all. in this film its the song that makes it good
inseption. this has 2 amazing tracks to make it such an epic film one is "Dream Is Collapsing" this sound track starts sinister but then progresses (as the scene dose in the film) into something very dark and chaotic as everything starts going wrong around them inception scene . the second track is"time" this one has much happyer conertations. its used at the end of the film when the main charater completes his mission and gets to see his kids again but the end is soft and sad to remeber the loss of his wife and to leave the film on a major cliff hanger. its very moving track that show the audince the emotions that the main charater is feeling. end scene (both songs by hanz zimmer)
these 3 songs are original scores made for the film but you can also use borrowed music that is already around before the film is made. eg plup fitction ( cant find a link sorry. more on that soon :)

casino royal title sequnce

the casino royal title sequnce is desinded to tell you about one major thing. and thats the character 'james bond' but it also gives you alot of forsite about what the film is about. the film is about gambling and james bond has to play texus holdem poker to bankrupt the bad guy. in the opening titles they use things associated with gambleing to illustrate everything. eg the spades (as in the card) are being used as bulletes and the flash made out of clubs. it also shows the people being made out of cards or card symbols. this shows that the cards are everything (litteraly in the title but metoforicly in the film). but as i said the main point of the opening is to show how much of bad ass james bond is. it tells the story of how he got his doubble 0 status basicly by killing loads of goons. it shows how he uses guns and hand to had combat and all thre fights he can get himself into but in the end he always wins. there is a bit where a womans face apears. this is introducing a love intrest which is a key compounate to a good film. but it don't tell you alot about her which is key to the ending of the film.casino royal

Holby city editing

Holby city <--------link) The scene starts with a close up on the leg of a boy in surgery. This shows what is going on in the scene. It then cuts to an establishing shot of the O.R. This is like a cut away but the other way round. It shows the detail then the room it is happening in. It then go’s to a long cut of one of the doctors telling the other what to do. It go’s to an eyeline match of what the doctor is looking at (the leg he's operating on) it then cuts to a close up of the other doctor being smug before panning to the operating doctor. I go’s to a shot/reverse shot of the to doctors talking. There is then a parallel edit of another patient. It a close up on her face as she’s being wheeled to the O.R. It then go’s to a long take edit of the person being wheeled from the back of the corridor to the O.R while dialog is going on. There is then an action match of the patient going through a set of door and coming out the other side. There is another action match of the boy back in surgery. There is a quick establishing shot then more shot/reverse shots of the two doctors talking to each other using over shoulder shots. There is then a cut away of a door that has opened in the back round. There is then a montage for doctors going into surgery and loved ones waiting out side, this has non-diergetic music edited on top of it. During this montage there is a cut away of a man tapping his fingers to a close up of his fingers and another one of a person in a room then opening a card.

editing

editing is hidden art form. but without it a film wouldn't make sence the make of a good editer is the fact that you cant see there work at all, the more hidden the edits are meens the better the film is. an editers job can be really hard. continuity is key. continuity is where the time streem is right in the film. eg a continuity error would be if two people were talking to each othe then suddenly in the next shot they had changed places or a more extreem example, the person in one shot is tall and skiny but in the next hes short and fat. when did that happen? continuity errors rip the audence out of a film. and its an editers job to make sure that that dosn't happen. another unseen part of an editers job is to make action parts actiony and slow parts slow. if you have a seen where two people are having a convosation then it brakes out into a big fight. at the first part the edits would be slow focusing on each person hows talking and maybe holding on peoples faces to show emotion but in the fight the edits would be points of a second apart and rushed around the room to show the chaos going on. if the editor didn't do this you would not be drawn into the film and get really board. a good example of this is a scene in rome where a man and a woman are talking then it gos to a synagogue where a fight brakes out. i will find a link soon.

the departed

The departed is a great film. The main theme is the concept of identity. There is a cop working for the bad guys and a bad guy working for the cops. It’s a very fast flowing plot which can be confusing at times but the confusingness works because you’re as confused as the characters he film so you feel more a part of it but it always makes sure the audience is one step ahead so that you can still enjoy the film. It’s set in a dark gloomy city which adds to the bad vibe of the characters. The camera use is very good in the film. When the cops rat meat with his team it’s a very wide angle shot, as if someone is watching from a distance. But there is one bit where the cop chiefs are having a meeting and the camera semi spins round them both which doesn’t work at all for the film and just drags you out of the viewing experience. Aside from this the director has done a very good job. The cop rat is on the verge of a brake down and to show this the director uses a lot of Dutch angles shots to show that the world is being flipped for him.

camra angles

camra angles can be used to show the significance of a stitutaion on sreen, a low angle lense can be use to make some one or something insunifican and a high angle lense can make some one or something inportant. wide angle long shot and panning shots can be used for establishing shots. over head shot and miedum shots are normally used for conversations and looking at people and close ups and super close ups are use to focus the audicence on a sertane object or move ment. together they all work to tell you different things to make up a hole story. the end

the shining opening

http://www.artofthetitle.com/ <------- link)  this film is the bassis for all modern horror films. it is one of the great classics and the titles are the most inportant bit. thats the bit that grabs people and gets them to watch the hole film. boring title means the audince will get up and leave. the title also tells us alot about whats going on in the story, in this title sequence it is just simpley a car driving thourgh the rockys. the director uses loads of long shots taken from a hellicopter to show how far away from civerlization the film is taking place. the titles also go on for longer than expected, again to show how far this car is going. the scenery is of grassy mountains and the car is a vw beatle. which would seem like its a pritty happy film. but the music is eary and creepy. this clashs makes the start confusing, and people get sceard when there confused. so this clash or happy and creepy puts the audince on edge. at the end the car is driving in to snowy sceanery. this temperture drop is another way of putting the audince on edge because sceary things normaly happen in the cold, or you get cold when your sceard.

sound

sound is a key part to a film, without it you wouldn't be able to understand any of the story. its is essential to get it right. even little bits wrong with it would through you out of the story like a door closing and the sound happens slightly to late or a car not making any noise. there are to main parts to sound. diegetic and non-diegetic. diegetic is sound going on in the scene, like a conversation or a dog barking, something you can see happening. (unless its off screan but you know wat i mean) .non-diegetic is when there is a sound track playing in the backround. like in a horror film they use the music to make it more tence. if you ever watch a horror film with no sound its not sceary at all :/ xx

sorry its late :/

sorry making my blog was late, i will work dubble time on it from now on.
